Jersey, the largest and southernmost of the Channel islands, lies south of England’s coast and 12 miles (19 km) west of the Cotentin peninsula of France. Its capital, St Helier St Helier is the capital of Jersey. It is the most populated of the twelve parishes of Jersey, and the only town. Jersey is of British Crown dependency with its own self-governing administration, though the UK government handles its defence and international relations. This means Jersey has its own laws, taxes, and legal system, and its inhabitants are British citizens but not UK citizens.
