The Isle of Man - a Land of Beauty and Tranquility

Rutland Hotel

HIGHLIGHTS:  Cregneash, Peel, Castletown, Port Erin, Laxey, Ramsey, St John’s

The Isle of Man lies in the midst of the Irish Sea halfway between England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. This is a rather special holiday island, with its own Parliament, postage stamps, and 1,000 years of history. The ancient Manx Electric Railway and vintage steam trains offer unique rides while Douglas Promenade has an air of nostalgia all of its own.

Excursions

Sunday: From local departure points we make our way to our overnight hotel.

Monday: To Heysham for our afternoon ferry crossing to the Isle of Man and our hotel for four nights.

Tuesday: A day to relax and explore Douglas.

Wednesday: Full day circular tour of the north of the island. First to the village of St. John’s, setting of the annual open air Manx Parliament on Tynwald Hill, then on to Ramsey, a harbour town and small seaside resort combined. We continue this afternoon to the historic mining village of Laxey, famous for the ‘Lady Isabella’ - the largest working waterwheel of its kind in the world.

Thursday: We travel to the ‘sunset city’ of Peel on the west coast, with its old fishing harbour, castle, promenade and winding streets, then by the scenic coastal road, to lovely Port Erin, set above a sheltered bay. On to the thatched Manx village of Cregneash, and the glass fronted visitor centre overlooking the Sound towards the Calf of Man. We return through ancient Castletown, the former capital, where medieval Castle Rushen guards the harbour.

Friday: We take the morning ferry to Heysham and enjoy a short sightseeing visit, before arriving at our overnight hotel.

Saturday: Homeward bound.
